Maine’s Moosehead Lake boreal forest is a prime bird watching spot for singing warblers, thrushes, vireos, and northern finches. Spruce Grouse, Black-backed Woodpecker, Boreal Chickadee, Gray Jay, and of course seeing a Moose are highlights of our bird watching tours in the North Maine Woods. We have numerous lakes, ponds, wetlands, and rivers that are ideal habitat for a variety of water birds to listen to and photograph.
Birding watching is a year round activity in Maine. When you visit the Moosehead Lake area in the spring, you can catch first-of-the-season glimpses of warblers, orioles, indigo buntings, Canadian geese and other seasonal visitors that have migrated north.
In addition to the spring arrival of birds, once summer arrives there is a variety of birds, including the ruby-throated hummingbird, waterfowl to include numerous varieties of ducks, hawks and osprey. This is also a great time of year for you to join us for a canoe paddle or Stand Up Paddleboarding on area ponds and waterways to see the common loon. Hearing the call of the loon can be one of the most amazing birding experiences that sends chills up and down one’s spine.
During the beautiful foliage season of autumn, birds begin their journey south toward warmer climates, but we continue to see northern flickers, partridge and grouse.
In winter, enjoy a quiet snowshoe hike in the Maine woods to see dark eyed junco, bluejay, cardinal, goldfinch, the black capped chickadee and red breasted nuthatch for some enjoyable backyard birding. If bald eagles excite you, we can take you to snowy riversides for sightings or enjoy a snowshoe hike with our Registered Maine guides.
The bald eagle is one of many birds you can spot in Maine year-round. Maine’s inland fisheries and wildlife reports that Maine has the largest population in the Northeast, 500 pairs. Bald eagle are actively seen at the waters edge, near rivers and inlets/outlets ideal for fishing and waterfowl.
